Build Authentic Connections: Networking Tips

SDS 043: Build Authentic Connections: Networking Tips

Hey! thank you for reading issue 043 of Startup Definition Sunday (SDS). You can read past issues here.

SDS is the only newsletter that is redefining support for Africa's emerging founders. Every other Sunday, we cut through the fundraising and ecosystem noise to bring actionable insights to 1K+ emerging founders.

(P.S. I'll never sell your information, ever)

If you’d like to sponsor future issues of SDS, here’s a simple way to do it.

Subscribers-only Cash Prize

Greetings from Nairobi, where July is too cold.

Thank you for being a loyal reader every two weeks. To show my appreciation, I started a biweekly game just for subscribers to win cash prizes.

Can you guess the exact time I'm writing today's issue?

Here are the rules:

  1. The person with the closest guess wins $5 from me.

  2. If no one guesses correctly by the next issue, the prize increases by $5, until someone gets it right.

In the last issue, no one managed to guess within 30 minutes of the correct time. So, the prize money is now $45.

Take a guess at what time of day I'm writing this issue. Reply to this email with your guess until 11:59pm on July 3rd. Good luck!

On Friday, I had a quarterly catch-up call with an old friend from my university days.

He reminded me how we met: we saw each other at every social and professional event on campus.

As two kids from Ghana and Jamaica studying in a new country, attending as many networking opportunities as we could opened us up to worlds we didn’t know existed.

Unfortunately, networking gets a bad reputation because, frankly, most of it can feel transactional.

However, as an early-stage founder, strategic networking can help you build meaningful connections that can propel your startup forward.

How do you network without being cringey?

Seek Authentic Connections: Networking is not just about collecting business cards or adding connections on LinkedIn. If that is your goal, you are already starting on the wrong foot. It's about building genuine relationships based on mutual trust and shared interests. There are several conferences you can attend to engage in conversations that matter. (PS: You’re invited to our biannual Global Fintech for Inclusion Summit in London). Beyond industry events, consider joining entrepreneurial communities to engage with other founders. Your network is your net worth, so invest your time wisely.

Give before you take: In Sunday school, I was taught that it is more blessed to give than to receive. The same applies to networking. Networking is a two-way street. Be generous with your knowledge, resources, and support. Offer value to others without expecting anything in return. By being a giver, you'll naturally attract like-minded individuals who appreciate your willingness to help.

Follow Up and Follow Through: After meeting someone new, don't let the connection fade away. Take the initiative to follow up and continue the conversation. Whether it's a quick email, a coffee meetup, or even a virtual call, nurturing your network requires consistent effort. Be genuine, show interest, and explore opportunities for collaboration. It's the little things that make a big difference.

My two pesewas:

Nowhere are your network and relationships more relevant than in Africa. Approaching networking as a strategic opportunity to give value to the people you are connected with is vital for the continued growth and success of your startup.

If you or someone you know should be receiving 2024 issues in their inbox, consider joining SDS so you don't miss exclusive sections in future editions.

If you only read one thing this week, read this...

Why is it worth your time? Stephen uses data to make a strong case that the opportunity in Africa tech lies within improving our existing markets and taking a longer view on returns potential. If the article is too long for you, check out a summary here.

That's all for today. As always, thank you for being an engaged reader.

I'll catch up with you in two weeks with more actionable insights.
